Callen Construction Provides Green Remodeling Tips
By Dave Amoroso Ron Sonntag Public Relations
"Green - it's all so new many homeowners don't know what's available so we try to educate them," said Francis Jones, CKBD, designer for Callen Construction, Inc., Muskego. "While some homeowners may not specifically ask about green methods or products, they are interested in hearing about it."
"For example, if you recommend a low-flow shower to a homeowner, their reaction isn't positive because they think they won't get enough water out of it to rinse off properly. But what they don't realize is that in low-flow showers the water is reduced, but it is mixed with air bubbles, so the force remains the same. When they hear that, they become more interested," he said.
Jones also takes care to explain the difference gallons of water per minute (GPM) makes in toilets and faucets. "Consumers won't know the difference unless we tell them," he said. "Our challenge as Remodelers and designers is to educate them."
As the green movement grows, product selection is expanding too. Low-flow faucets, which produce water at a maximum rate of one-and-a-half GPM compared to upwards of five GPM with standard faucets, are available in more styles and from all the major manufacturers. Newer dual-flush toilets have two options - a low flush and a higher one as needed. Consumers can watch for the EPA's WaterSense label, meaning they are at least 20 percent more efficient than standard models.
Callen Construction has an extensive showroom of environmentally friendly products consumers can choose from. "Our cabinetry line from Holiday and StarMark are approved by the Kitchen Cabinetry Manufacturers Association Environmental Stewardship Program," said Jones. "That certifies cabinet manufacturers have demonstrated their commitment to environmental sustainability and to helping consumers identify environmentally-friendly products."
"There are a lot of renewable resources available including bamboo, cork, ceramic tile, granite and quartzite, recyclable glass, and MDF (medium density fiberboard)," he said. MDF is made from lumber waste products that would otherwise be dumped in a landfill. MDF can be used in furniture, shelving, laminate flooring, molding, and doors.
Windows can be green, too, not only by saving on heating and cooling, but also by being made from renewable materials.
"Our Marvin Infinity(r) replacement window line is made of Ultrex(r) fiberglass, which offers many green features including using recycled materials, using less energy to produce than vinyl, having no VOC, being made from abundant silica sand, and having a very long lifespan because fiberglass is stronger than wood or vinyl," Jones said.
One of Callen's clients recently had a kitchen remodeled incorporating many natural materials. The kitchen remodel included many green elements including slate stacked wall stone, granite countertops, marble backsplash and Marmoleum(r) flooring.
"Marmoleum(r) is comprised of natural ingredients (linseed oil, cork, tree rosin, and natural minerals) and because it is made without any harmful VOC's (volatile organic compounds) or other toxic chemicals, it does not offgas," said Jones.
Another client remodeled specifically with green in mind, using new Energy Star appliances, solid wood cabinets, granite countertops, fluorescent lighting, and low VOC wood floors.
"Low VOC products are an important element of green building," said Jones who always recommends no VOC or low VOC paints, caulking, insulation, stains, varnishes, and drywall primers and sealers, to name a few. "We always keep the homeowner informed about these products, so they know what we are using," he said. "We explain about chemical sensitivities."
